The Atheros Chipset is well supported in Linux, using the madwifi-ng drivers. Things like Ubuntu LiveCD's will simply detect the card and it'll work perfectly. I have a "Netgear 108Mbps WG311T", which uses the Atheros chipset and it works fine in Linux, using madwifi-ng drivers. PCIid is 168C:0013.

The NetGear WGT624 Router/AP NetGear WG311T and WG511T cards work fine (in my XP Pro), but NetGear (and D-Link) SuperG Atheros 108mbps modes are mostly broken. They make fine B/G connections based on my experience and testing. Search for messages if you care to learn more about it. Good luck.

Ath0, netgear WG311T problem.
IPCONFIG /RENEW does not work as the router doesn't respond. In order to get the connection to work I have to bring up the 'Netgear WG311T Smart Wizard' and click on 'Apply'. Then I get the message 'Internet Connected' in the status box at the bottom of the window and an IP address is allocated by the router.

also have a WAG511, which also works with the ath driver. The WG511 and WG311 a non-Atheros chipset and so you'd have to try project evil. Is there a bug in the ath manual page then?
